PS Cafe Petit (Tiong Bahru)

The plus point of working near Tiong Bahru is the access to all the little cafes that have sprung up in this recently hipster neighborhood. So for SH's farewell lunch, we thought we'll go to PS Cafe.

The Tiong Bahru branch of PS Cafe is the Petit version - meaning it only carries the takeaway menu. Nonetheless, we managed to secure ourselves a table. I've actually never tried any of the PS Cafe, but I've been told that their truffle fries are to-die-for. So, I ABSOLUTELY have to try the truffle fries! It was served in a nice little paper cone, and sprinkled generously with parmesan. The truffle flavor was strong without being overpowering (wait a minute, can truffle ever overpower? haaa). The fries were piping hot and crisp, the perfect vehicles for carrying the truffle goodness to my mouth.

SH went for the All-day breakfast panini. Bacon, eggs and cheese sandwiched between beautifully toasted bread. Look at the cheeeese....

The beef bolognaise was quite normal. It was a good pasta, don't get me wrong. It just wasn't impressive. And somehow the takeaway format seems to take something away from it. But I've already known it's a takeaway menu so I can't complain.

Given the small takeaway menu here, I don't think I'm in a position to judge the food. The fries were good, that's for sure. The other food were simple, mainly because they were meant to be eaten on the go. I think to be fair to PS Cafe, I need to go to a full-fledge restaurant before I can cast my judgement.

I love breakfast. So does FQ. And after my Antoinette experience, I fell in love with poached eggs. I first visited Forty Hands when we wanted to give XP a treat for his thesis submission, and found out that every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all-day breakfast is served til 3pm (I think). Since then, we will hike over to Forty Hands on Fridays whenever we have the breakfast food craving.

Forty hands have very good coffee, which can also be found in Tiong Bahru Bakery. They are both under the same management. And what's breakfast without a good coffee or tea? So I got myself a latte.

XP went for the lamb sandwich. Nicely toasted sandwiches with lamb and vegetables. Their sandwiches looks attractive, but I was always enticed by the breakfast food. Their gourmet hotdogs are also supposed to be signatures but I've never tried them.

So breakfast food. I got their eggs cocotte. I don't think it fits the proper definition of eggs cocotte I found online, which were supposedly eggs cooked in a ramekin of some sort. Theirs is actually beautifully poached eggs served on a bed of truffled sautéed spinach and mushroom in a stone bowl. Toasts are served on the side and I used them as vehicles for bringing the gooey yummy egg yolks into my mouth. This is the one dish I have a biggest weakness for and have ordered at least thrice by now. Poached eggs and truffle, who can resist?

The Big Boy's breakfast. A generous platter of different breakfast foods. Eggs done your way, sausages, pita, grilled tomato, mesclun salad, and bolognaise sauce. It's a very food coma inducing meal - do take note. They serve it on the very old-school metal plates. East crockery meets west food. Very fusion indeed.

Classic Eggs Benedict. Poached eggs served on bread and Canadian bacon, flooded in Hollandaise sauce. The make or break of this dish is the eggs and the sauce. The eggs I have said earlier are beautiful. J said the sauce was good too.

And I love their truffle fries. We always order a serving to share. Shoestring fries fried to a perfect crisp and served with just the right note of truffle flavor. Ok, maybe I wouldn't mind more truffle flavor. But it's still a good truffle fries.

I've also had their salmon hash which was more of a salmon chowder. Liked it too, but I only had it becos I had reached my eggs quota for that week. Otherwise I'll be automatically drawn to the eggs cocotte.

We still come back frequently whenever the breakfast mood hits. It's quite a hike, but so worth the effort. Do note that they don't have a huge seating capacity so big groups may be a problem.
